New Delhi : Congress president Sonia Gandhi’s rally in Uttarakhand, her first since she came back from a surgery abroad, was cancelled after she got fever, a party leader said Wednesday.
“The Congress president is suffering from fever. Her visit to Uttarakhand has been cancelled,” AICC general secretary Janardan Dwivedi said.
The rally in Gauchar in Chamoli district of Uttarakhand was to be the 64-year-old leader’s first major public appearance since she came back after a surgery abroad for an undisclosed ailment in August.
The rally was being seen as the launch of the Congress’s campaign for the upcoming assembly polls in 2012 in the Bharatiya Janata Party-ruled state. She was also expected to lay the foundation stone for the Rishikesh-Karnaprayag rail project.
Her speech would be read out by a representative at the rally, sources said.
The Congress president is a star campaigner and the party is banking heavily on her crowd-pulling abilities in the five states of Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Goa, Manipur and Uttarakhand going to the polls next year.
