Reliance, 8 others in run for Himachal mega cement plant

Shimla : Reliance Cement has proposed a 5 million tonne capacity mega cement plant the biggest so far in Himachal Pradesh .Besides Reliance eight other firms have bid for this project proposed to be set up in Chopal area of Shimla district .

While the others have proposed a 2 million tonne capacity plant , Reliance Cementation Pvt Ltd(RCPL) of the Anil Ambani Group has proposed a 5 million tonne plant . Experts say this will have a life of at least 40 years .

The other firms who have bid for the grant of prospective license are Lafarge , JK Cements , Ambuja , ACC , Dalmia , Abhijit Group , Laxmi Cements and Atha Mines , officials told the Hill Post

The plant is proposed to be set up at the Sanrothi limestone deposits which is close to the Gummah limestone deposits where India cements is already setting up a 2 million tonnes capacity plant .

“The process of technical and financial evaluation of bids is being carried out on the basis of which allotment will be made ,” said J . S . Rana Director state industries department .

The state already has four cement plants in operation run by ACC , Ambuja , CCI and Jaypee which have a total capacity of 12.6 million tonnes . Four others with a capacity of 7.27 million are in the process of being set up .

Environmentalists have been expresing deep concern at the setting up of so many cement plants in the fragile mountain terrain of the state .
