Google’s internet bus reaches Kolkata

Kolkata : Online search giant Google Thursday rolled a special bus into the city to familiarise people with the importance and usage of the internet.

The bus will travel to nine other destinations in West Bengal till Jan 11 next year, said a top company official.

The bus will be in the city till Dec 2, when it moves to Uluberia in neighbouring Howrah district.

Other cities in the route are Haldia, Kharagpur, Bankura, Purulia, Asansol, Durgapur, Baharampur and Chandannagar.

“The internet bus journey was started in February 2009 and it has already travelled 11 states, covering 130 towns,” Google India director Vinay Goel told mediapersons here.

“We are targeting first time users. We want to familiarise them with the internet. So the bus will halt outside schools and at public places,” Goel said.

India now has around 82 million internet users, of whom 37 percent are from smaller towns.
