Shimla: Tension prevailed on Himachal Pradesh University campus as police booked 7 students for rioting, which included holding out a threat to vice-chancellor ADN Bajpai and preventing him from getting to office.
On a complaint by university security officer Hem Raj, the students booked by the police are Munish Sharma, Yaspaul Rana, Khushi Ram, Puneet Dhanta, Lokinder, Hosiyar Singh and Balbir Prashar.
Heavy police has been deployed on the campus as the students are protesting against the universities decision to withhold an oath taking ceremony of the elected body for the Students Central Association.
Students belonging to communist outfit Students Federation of India, which decisively won the students election, earlier in the day protested by showing the vice-chancellor black flags and blocked his way to office.
State secretary SFI Vijendra Mehra said, “not allowing an elected body of the students’ community to assume charge was a ploy being enacted to subvert the mandate.
On the other hand the vice-chancellor had withheld the oath taking ceremony in order to find out the reasons for violence on the campus earlier in the year.
A committee had been appointed by the VC that was asked to submit a report about the violence and a protest about allotment of hostels to girl students.
