Beijing : About eight million abortions are carried out in China every year, a survey said.
The abortion rate was high since many young people have a poor understanding of birth control, said Cheng Linan, an official.
The survey showed that 88 percent of the respondents were confused about birth control, Xinhua reported, citing a survey by the China Medical Association.
Nearly half of the abortions were due to birth control methods not being used and barely two percent of abortions were carried out for medical reasons.
Cheng said repeated abortions damage a woman’s health and increases the risk of miscarriages or premature birth.
“Young people should regard birth control as part of a healthy lifestyle,” Cheng was quoted as saying.
