12 dead in Himachal bus plunge

 


Shimla : At least twelve people were killed and four others are missing when a bus rolled down a hill and fell into a river in Himachal Pradesh’s Chamba district on Wednesday,police said.

“Twelve bodies have been fished out of the river and search is on for four other bodies downstream.One person is injured,” said Chandu Ram Thakur, a senior official on phone from Tissa.

“The private bus was travelling from Dalhousie to Banjhardu in the Tissa valley some 70 km from Chamba town when the bus rolled into the Bihali river,” he said.

Chamba has seen several road accidents in the last one year or so.

    We are a country of non-serious people. We don’t learn anything, be it a terrorist attack year after year or the accident after accident on the same very road. No serious thought has gone into finding the factors behind the accidents, especially on Chamba roads which are almost ritualistic, and take some stern measures. In my travels I have seen guys giggling and even cracking jokes while showing to the passerbys that a vehicle has rolled down into the river and the family is finished. What next? Wait for another one…
