Shimla: Six police men were injured and two police vehicles torched in Baddi area of Solan district (125 Kms from here) after an angry mob protesting the death of a youth, allegedly due to police atrocities, turned violent on Monday.
Suchha Singh, a worker with Bold Communication, Jharmajri attempted to electrocute himself by climbing a pole carrying high tension electricity wires.
The youth is said to have taken the extreme step as he was being tortured and harassed by the police over the pass few days.
Suchha belonged to the Gujjar community and was a resident of Kalka. On being shifted to PGI Chandigarh in emergency, he succumbed to his injuries on Sunday night.
On Monday morning a large number of members of the Gujjar community reached Baddi and staged an angry demonstration, said SR Mardi, the Additional General Police looking after law and order.
“The crowd turned violent and resorted to stone pelting in which six policemen were injured,†he said.
The agitators refused to cremate the body till action was taken against the policemen involved. Two police vehicles that arrived on the scene carrying additional forces were set on fire by the mob.
When the agitated mob started to march towards the office of SP Baddi, police resorted to a mild lathi charge to disburse the angry crowd.
The mob was pacified only after an FIR under section 306 of IPC evoking abetment of suicide was registered against the accused policemen.
