Nine detained for murderous attack
Shimla: Nine people have been detained for the murder of 3 persons in a community clash that took place late on Wednesday at Ponta Sahib in Sirmaur district. The fight had 3 others injured, one of them with grievous stab injuries.
To disperse an angry and retaliatory mob, police today fired three rounds of tear gas shells. A police vehicle is said to have been burned down and few others vehicles have been damaged.
“Four huts belonging to one community have also been burned down in the running feud,” said SR Mardi, IG law and order.
With tension prevailing in the area, heavy police has been deployed. SP Sirmaur, Punita Bhardwaj said that 9 persons had been arrested and depending upon the investigation more could be detained.
Of the 6 people stabbed or injured in the clash, 3 succumbed to their injuries and the other three have been hospitalized, she said.
Chetan, one of the injured has been shifted to PGI Chandigarh, where he has been operated upon and is recuperating from his injuries, said the district police chief.The other two injured are Sagar and Shelly who are in hospital at Dehradun.
Those killed in the fight were identified as Sanju, Anil and Sunil Kumar, said Bhardwaj.
The clash is said to have been sparked over an eve teasing incident that took place on Holi Day. On Tuesday, Ponta police were able to avert a clash among feuding groups of Bahti (OBC) and Valmiki (SC) castes as the eve teasing incident caused a division along caste lines.
Brandishing sharp weapons, late on Wednesday night, one of the caste groups is said to have attacked the other group which resulted in fatalities.
