Shimla: Agriculture department and Indian Institute of Technology, Mandi have tied up to provide extension services to farmers through mobile phones.
Secretary agriculture Ram Subagh Singh today let a group of farmers in Gopalpur area of Sarkhghat know that the department had talked to director IIT Mandi about developing a voice based model to be used through mobile phone for disseminating agriculture related information for farmers.
On a pilot basis, such a scheme had been launched in Chennai and it had shown promising results. The scheme was specifically beneficial for villages where broadband services were not available, said Singh.
