Shimla: To contain industrial pollution in Baddi-Barotiwala-Nalagarh (BBN), the government intends to have a common effluent treatment plant set up for scientific disposal of municipal, sewerage and industrial waste.
The government has nominated Baddi Infrastructure Ltd as the sole agency for collecting, depositing, processing and disposing of municipal and industrial pollutants in the industrial belt, said an official spokesman.
The firm would be setting up a Rs 80 crore effluent treatment plant, which would treat the effluents on a payment basis after approval from the government, he added.
The government would enforce only scientific disposal of effluents by big or small units through the common treatment plant and violators would be penalized, said the spokesman.
Largely because of the investment incentives for new industry to Himachal between 2003 and March 2010, Baddi-Barotiwala-Nalagarh has witnessed intense industrialization, but without proper effluents treatment plants has become one of the most industrially polluted belts, often leading to river streams and natural drainage system bearing the brunt.
The treatment plant, a long pending demand from the established industry would help to ease the situation.
