Shimla: Uneasy calm prevailed at HPU campus through the day even though 54 of the 57 who were detained on Thursday were bailed out but the violence spread outside as SFI and AVBP supporters from a local college clashed on a road resulting in 5 getting injured.
Having succeeded in bringing some order at the HPU campus, RM Sharma, SP Shimla said that 2 SFI and 3 AVBP students from Government Kotshera College were injured today in a clash that took place at Ambedhakar Chowk.
“On complaints lodged by both groups cases under section 323 and 147 of IPC had been lodged and the matter was being investigated,†he said. So far, no one has been arrested in the case, he added.
Among the injured are Chander Kant and Nand Lal from SFI and Vikas Thakur, Ajay Mehta and Prashant of AVBP. Chander Kant is said to have suffered a broken tooth in the fight.
Shaken by the assault on a professor at HPU by agitating students on Thursday, some members of the teaching faculty today staged a demonstration outside the vice-chancellors office demanding security and protection from such unruly behavior.
Leading the protest Arvind Kalia, president of HP Teachers Welfare Association demanded strict disciplinary action against those who attacked Sanjiv Sharma, a professor in physical education.
The teachers’ body has decided to wear black badges in protest till action is not taken against the culprits.
About the students detained on Thursday, the district police chief said, “of the 57 arrested on Thursday, barring 3 against whom there were more serious charges, others had been released on bail.â€
University spokesman Ranvir Verma disclosed that counseling being held for admissions at various faculties concluded peacefully today.
Regarding taking disciplinary action against those students who were found indulging in violence, he said that a fact finding committee had been constituted. “Action would be taken only after the committee submits its report, he said.
Principal secretary education Shirkant Baldi, while appealing to the students community for maintaining peace and order has held out that the government would have no option but to cancel university and college elections should the situation deteriorate any further.
