Shimla: Uncertainty over setting up a steel processing plant in Himachal appears to have finally settled as chief minister Prem Kumar Dhumal announced February 21 as the day Ram Vilas Paswan, union minister for steel, would lay the foundation stone for the Rs 110 crore project.
Dhumal after meeting with Paswan at Delhi said that the state would transfer 7.20 hectare of land at Kandrori in Kangra district on a 99 year lease for setting up the plant. Sail Authority of India (SAIL) is to set up the first public sector steel plant in Himachal
Besides providing tax and other incentives that are applicable to the private sector, Dhumal said that the site would be connected with an all weather road, a 11 KV load power line would be laid out to meet the 4500 KW power requirement of the unit and 800 kiloliters of water would be made available on a daily basis.
The plant is projected to provide employment to 200 persons and would be implemented in a phased manner with TMT bar mill being installed first. Production would start within 18 months.
