Kangra, (ANI): In an effort to lure the youth to water sports in Himachal Pradesh, the regional Water Sports Center is training boys and girls from remote areas of Chamba district in basic water sports.
The fourteen-day training camp from first January is being held at Maharana Pratap Sagar Pong dam in Kangra district.
Fourteen boys and as many girls took part in the camp, sponsored by the district administration.
Unmindful of extreme winter cold they were enthusiastic in getting trained in swimming, water safety rescue, canoeing, kayaking, water surfing and sailing.
“We organize basic course for the youth in the age group of six to eighteen years. These children are full of enthusiasm and zeal despite the unfavorable weather here. They are very keen to learn various sports activities,” said Rakesh Kumar, a training officer.
The area is predominantly inhabited by tribals who see in such training courses as an opportunity for employment generation as the state is traversed by a large number of rivers and rivulets with great prospect of water sports.
“We believe that if we perform well, then certainly we get an employment in the related field. The techniques we have learnt will also be useful in helping others,” said Vinod, a participant.
The training course has been organised with funds generated under Special Component Sub Plan for the economic development of weaker sections including tribals. By Hemant Chauhan (ANI)
