Rajeev Bindal, the Health Minister announced today that the state government in order to provide better health services to the people of the state would be introducing one-year Diploma course in Hearing Language and Speech (DHLS) in collaboration with All India Institute of Speech and Hearing, Mysore (Karnataka) through distance education with intake capacity of 20 candidates from August, 2008 at Indira Gandhi Medical College, Shimla.
He said that this will support the National Programme of Prevention and Control of Deafness, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India. IGMC, Shimla is one of the six centres from whole of India that were chosen to cater to the needs of the individuals with communication disorder across the country. The students would be trained for early identification of the disorders and basic rehabilitation.
