Shimla: Senior BJP Shanta Kumar is all set to file his papers of the lone Rajya Sabha seat from Himachal, elections for which are scheduled to be held on 26th March.
Party sources revealed that Shanta Kumar would file his papers on Friday.
As the congress party has already announced to not field any candidate opposing the BJP nominee, Shanta Kumar’s election to the upper house is a foregone conclusion.
However the result will only be formally announced after scrutiny of papers and last date of withdrawals on March 19th.
In a house of 68 legislators, BJP had 41 members, Congress 23, BSP 1 and there are 3 independents.
Shanta Kumar, a two time former chief minister and a former member of the union cabinet, is going to be the first senior leader from Himachal who would become a member of the Rajya Sabha.
The seat fell vacant after Suresh Bhardwaj resigned his Rajya Sabha seat in December 2008, and decided to contest state assembly election.
