Shimla: Public Sector Undertaking BSNL wad going to expand broadband services in Himachal and by March 2009, the target was to bring 400 additional centers under broad band services, Shakeel Ahmad, minister of state for communication and information technology said here today.
He said this would raise capacity to 64,000 broad band users. Presently there were only 9,700 broad band users in the state, he disclosed.
Though there was a drop in land line connections, said Ahmad, but it was on account of migration to mobile services. BSNL with 10 lakh connections had a market share of 39 percent in the state and was planning to add an additional 3 lakh lines, he added.
Defending questions about quality of service offered by BSNL, he said that cable cutting and theft by vested interest was badly damaging the infrastructure of the state public sector undertaking which was often resulting in deficient services.
Regarding postal services the minister announced plans to open five new post offices in Himachal circle, of which three would be in Mandi district, one in Kangra district and one in Una district. To overcome shortage of staff, recruitments would be made, he added.
