Death toll put at 94
Taking stock of the rain damage caused to infrastructure, crops, private property and human lives, revenue minister Sat Mahajan told the Vidhan Sabha that as the monsoon will still active in the state, the total damage would cross the Rs 1000 crore mark.
About the human lives lost in house collapse, cloudbursts and other rain related calamities, he said, so far 94 people had died in the state. Besides the heavy toll of human lives, over 2000 houses had suffered damage and about 1000 livestock had perished, said Mahajan.
The government had released Rs 107.28 crore from the disaster management relief fund and a team headed by chief minister Virbhadra Singh would meet Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi to secure more relief for the state, said the minister in a house which was devoid of opposition members. He said that district magistrates had been asked to compile detailed damage reports, which will come before the state cabinet before relief is sought from the central government. Mahajan said that the relief manual would be amended to include a relief provision for damage to private property in a natural calamity.
