NAHAN JUNE 7:
At a press conference convened in the Nahan police station here today Mr. Jai Prakash Singh, Superintendent of Police Sirmour revealed that police had arrested 11 persons in connection with the assault on the police party which took place on Monday last.
He said that incident took place during the night hours at about 11.30 P.M., four policeman of Nahan Police Station were assaulted by some miscreants near petrol pump. Police party headed by SHO Nahan was returning after a patrolling from Kala Amb side. Police party was attacked with iron rods, lathies and pipes by the residents of nearby locality after police tried to nab four boys of the area who were roaming on the roads in the suspicious circumstances.
Police could nab one boy while rest of three boys ran away from the scene and appeared on the spot in just a few minutes along with nine more persons who immediately attacked the police party with iron rods, Lathies and pipes. Policemen were quite unaware of any such attack and had kept their sticks in the Police van. Inspector Khazana Ram, Station House Officer of Nahan Police Station, Sub Inspector Subhsh Chand, Driver of Police Van Rajender Singh and Constable Naseeb Chand were badly beaten up by the assailants. They received mainly head injuries and other multiple injuries on the different parts of their body.
Mr. Singh said that six accused were arrested from Nahan while five accused were nabbed from the Sangroor [Plunjab] last night. He said that accused were produced in the court today, all of them were remanded in the police custody till June 12th. He said that one accused in this case was still at large. He added that wanted person had already been booked in the 11 criminal cases. He hoped that he would be arrested soon as police had vital clues regarding his whereabouts.
SP said that out of the eleven accused arrested four belongs to one family while seven were close relatives of each other. He said that nine accused had criminal police record.
Those arrested were Prem Chand [55] already booked in 8 criminal cases, Gagan [23], booked in one case of theft, Sandeep [25] [two cases], Vikas Rawat [20] [one case], Nirmla Devi [50] [three cases], Akash Kumar [23] [one case], Sagar [30] [seven cases], Shakti Singh [3 cases], Vikram has already been booked in four criminal cases, while there was no previous case registered against Arun Kumar and Rama Devi.
He said that one seriously injured constable Naseeb Chand was same day referred to PGI Chandigarh but today injured Sub Inspector Subhash Chand had been rushed to PGI as he show no improvement in the district hospital due to fracture in the scull. His condition was however stable, he added.
S.P. revealed that now all the police officials had been asked to carry their arms and sticks while on patrolling. He said that Himachal was a peaceful state and such incidents were not witnessed in the past that’s why police was not very particular regarding carrying arms with them all the time. S.P. added that till today no evidence had been found to term this attack ‘pre planned’.
