New Delhi, July 1 (IANS) Three members of a betting syndicate were arrested here for placing wagers on matches of the Tri-Nation ODI series cricket matches being played between India, the West Indies and Sri Lanka in the Caribbeans, police said Monday.
Naresh Thakker, 27, Ajay Satija, 36, and Hemant Kumar, 34, were arrested Sunday while placing bets on the India-West Indies match.
“The accused were found operating the entire betting and were feeding details in laptop inside a room in context of the ongoing India-West Indies cricket match played yesterday (Sunday),” said a police officer.
A laptop was recovered in which the accused maintained the record of bookings. Two mobiles were being used for bets. Voices of bookies and punters were also found recorded.
The same group had placed bets in crores of rupees during this year’s Indian Premier League (IPL) series, Champions Trophy and the ongoing Tri-Nation series.
Thakkar, the main accused who owns a garment shop, revealed that in the beginning of 2012, he came in contact with some bookies who were experts in betting in cricket matches.
“To make quick buck, he started his own betting racket with the help of his friends,” said the officer.
