Mobile operators Unitech Wireless and Idea Cellular have been allocated 4.4MHz of spectrum in the 1800MHz band by the the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) for three of the country’s calling circles: Haryana, Himachal Pradesh and Kolkata.
The allocation means that Idea now has spectrum in 16 of the 22 circles. The start-up cellco, which sold a 60% stake to Norwegian telecoms group Telenor in October 2008, is currently aiming to raise approximately INR25 billion (USD503 million) through asset sales and equity in order to reduce debts.
Meanwhile, Tata Teleservices, which is set to roll out its mobile phone network on the dominant GSM technology platform, said its network would be managed by Nokia Siemens Networks.
