Chandigarh : The Punjab government Thursday cautioned people against illegally serving liquor in marriages and other ceremonies.
“People organising functions in marriage palaces and banquet halls or at any other venues have been told to check the illegal serving of liquor and other eatables,” a state government spokesman said here.
He said that the people organizing functions must obtain liquor permit (L-50A) from the excise and taxation officer concerned in advance.
“They should also ensure that the marriage palace or banquet hall in which the function is being organised, possesses an L-5D licence allowing consumption of liquor on special occasions.”
The government has warned people against serving liquor brought from other states. They have also been told that liquor from defence canteens cannot be served at such functions.
The spokesman said that at several marriage palaces and banquet halls in the vicinity of Chandigarh, which is a union territory, the liquor being served was found to be from Chandigarh or Haryana.
“This is illegal and people violating this law can face action under the Punjab Excise Act,” he said.
