Shimla: Pulling up the hospitality industry for not adhering to standards, tourism officials have fined about 600 hotels in two months and realized over Rs 5 lakhs as fines imposed on the erring units.
Surprise checks were carried out at Chamba, Kullu, Kangra, Shimla, Una, Hamirpur, Mandi, Bilaspur, and Sirmaur, said a spokesman of the tourism department.
Cases of overcharging, unhygienic conditions and other violations of HP Tourism Development and Registration Act 2002 were noticed. The erring hotels were booked and many of them were spot fined, he said.
The hotels have been warned to spruce up their properties, maintain proper hygiene and follow transparent room tariff systems. Establishment licenses of habitual defaulters could be even canceled, said the spokesman.
