Shimla: After initially having downgraded the two government medical colleges in Himachal Pradesh, the Medical Council of India today recommended renewal of permission for 100 MBBS seats for each of them.
Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh said here today that Medical Council of India (MCI) has recommended the renewal of permission of 100-100 MBBS seats of both the Government Medical Colleges of the State.
The government had vigorously pursued the matter of restoring the number of 100 MBBS seats each in Indira Gandhi Medical College, Shimla and Dr. Rajendra Prasad Government Medical College, Tanda with Government of India.
The State has assured MCI that shortcomings, if any, would be removed as per the recommendations, said the chief minister.
Earlier without informing the state, MCI on its website had reduced the intake for IGMC to 65 seats and for Tanda Medical College to 50 MBBS Seats.
Shortage of infrastructure was cited as the reason for downgrading the two state medical colleges but much to the surprise of government authorities and the students community, a newly opened private medical college was permitted 150 MBBS seats by MCI.
