Welhams Girls of Uttarakhand tops in country in academics!

Dehradun: This  capital city of Uttarakhand, even before this small mountain state was formed, had created a mark for itself because of its schools. Parents not only from various parts of India, but the globe vied to get their children and wards admitted into these schools. And while the general trend has been of decline in performance, the city schools have managed to maintain their standards.Welhams Girls of Uttarakhand tops in country in academics

At least this is what one gathers taking into consideration the latest standing of schools as done by The Learning Point, an organization of the IITians of the country who ranked 826 in India based on the average percentage score in best four subjects, including English, as per their performance in the ISC-2013 exams.

And while The Doon School has often been repeated as the best school whereas all round performance is concerned, its ‘sister school’, Welhams Girls School has been ranked number one by The Learning Point, giving it an average percentage score of 91.73. The Modern High School for Girls, Kolkatta with 88.59 ranks third and La Martinere Girls College, Lucknow with 88.09 comes fourth.

Incidentally, The Doon School which is perhaps the hallmark of educational institutions in the country, particularly at the school level, managed to get the 10th position. However, it is the Welhams Girls School that deserves the accolades, as it has moved up from the second position last year to come on the top.

However, Brightland School of Dehra Dun, that was just about making its presence felt in the seventies and had more or less established its reputation as a school for academics in the eighties, has shown the results that dedication and motivation of an individual can bring about in the field of education. While other schools were established much earlier, Brightland ranks 14 in the list of 826 schools from all over the country.

Other schools from the city that have marked their presence in the top 50 include St Joseph’s Academy, which has been ranked 35th with a score of 83.54 and its ‘sister school’, Convent of Jesus and Mary, close behind ranked 37th and having a score of 83.33. The Summer Valley School with a score of 82.66 ranks 43.

Some of the schools of the city, which may not be ranked amongst the top 50 but have done fairly well as far as their performance is concerned include (not as per their ranking), Anne Mary, a school started a couple of decades back by an alumnus of St Joseph’s Academy and his German wife, St Thomas College, St Jude’s School, Hopetown Girls School, Doon Presidency, The Aryan School, Raja Ram Mohan Roy Academy, Guru Nanak Academy, Hilton School, Touchwood School and Carman School amongst others.

The organisation claims that the report has been prepared on a near-complete data set for ICSE-10-2013, ISC-12-2013 and ISC-12-2012. Not more that 2-3% of records were estimated to be missing from the data. In the absence of an official statistical release from the Council or MHRD, these are probably the most authentic school wise statistics available for the current academic year. It is possible that there are a few minor deviations and fluctuations because of the missing records (estimated to be not more than 2-3%, and less than 1% for the ISC-2013 Class 12 Examination).

It also states that these tabulations are completely objective and based on academic averages alone. These do not account for the varying levels of effort that schools have to put in due to their remote locations and the challenges that they face in educating students from a spectrum of socio-economic backgrounds. And so, this report is not necessarily and indicator on what the school’s input is the development of the student: with the limited data that we have (only academic) it is hard to segment what component of the annual performance can be attributed to the student’s socio-economic and home background, and what component can be attributed to the quality of education imparted in the school.
