Virbhadra opens new bridge in Shimla

Shimla: Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh today inaugurated a bridge near the Auckland tunnel here, which was constructed at a cost of Rs.2.52 crore under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM).

Speaking on the occasion, the chief minister said the foundation stone of the bridge was laid by him during previous regime of the Congress in March 2007 but the Bharatiya Janata Party government, which remained in power from 2008 onwards, failed to complete it in the stipulated time.

With the construction of the bridge, the flow of traffic would be eased besides facilitating the pedestrians as separate pedestrian path has been constructed along its side.

Virbhadra Singh said more than Rs.10 crore has been spent on construction of tunnel beneath Auckland House School and the bridge has shortened by around one-and-half km the distance between Lakkar Bazar and Sanjauli.

A long awaited necessity for smoother flow of traffic around Shimla and in particular to Auckland House turn was a must. It is a happy note that at last bridge and tunnel have been completed and opened to traffic.
