Shivani, a college students says, “Not many outside Sirmaur have heard about Pauri wala but many devotees throng the place each year. Besides the place having religious significance, it is also a very scenic spot and has tremendous tourism potential that has never been explored.”

Legend holds that impressed by Ravana’s, King of Lanka, penance and austerity Lord Shiva bestowed on him immortality on the condition if he would make 5 steps to heaven (Swardg Ki Seedhi) in a day.

Starting out from Haridwar, the Har Ki Pauri’ there was the first one before beginning to work on the second one and completing it at ‘Pauri Wala’. The 3rd Pauri is said to be ‘Chooreshwar Mahadev‘ and the 4th one is at ‘Kinner Kailash‘.

It was a tired Ravana that he slept and could not complete the fifth Pauri on the same day. Unable to fulfill the conditionality, the lord of Lanka was deprived of Amarta (immortality).

At Pauri Wala, Lord Shiva is signified in the Shivling at the place and whosoever comes forth with a pure heart, seeking a wish is rewarded with fulfillment.

Believers and the residents living close to the shrine say that the Shivling grow by the size a rice grain on every Shivratri, a festival held in honour of Lord Shiva in the winter or early spring months.

On each Shivratri, a ‘mela’ (a village fair) is organised at Pauri Wala, when hundreds of devotees and residents of nearby villages throng the place. Besides some other religious festivals, the temple at Pauri is a secluded spot, visited only by the die-hard believers of the legend.
