Srinagar, April 15 (IANS) Three villagers were killed Monday in an avalanche in Kashmir, an official said.
The incident occurred in the afternoon in the frontier Uri area of Baramulla district.
The victims were buried alive in the avalanche near the mountainous Kunjal village, the official said.
The villagers had gone to Kunjal to pick mushrooms when an avalanche hurtled down on them.
“The villagers themselves launched a rescue operation and we also dispatched a police team to the area. The bodies of three villagers were recovered and handed over to their relatives,” District Magistrate G.A. Khawaja told IANS.
Sources said people of the area leave their homes early for mushroom hunting and picking these days. The mushrooms grow in abundance in the mountains around this time of the year.
