Shimla: The Kangra polytechnic institute is to be upgraded into an engineering college and an Indian Institute of Information Technology (IIIT) under Private Public Partnership (PPP) is to be established in Una, GS Bali, the technical minister stated here before media.
Showing concern over the number of technical institutions that had come up in the recent past, the minister said, “quality education would be encouraged and teaching shops without adequate infrastructure would be derecognized.”
A decision had been taken to upgrade the Kangra polytechnic college to an engineering college and setting up an IIIT at Una with an investment of Rs 100 Cr under PPP mode, he said.
A hydro-engineering college would be set up in Bilaspur district and infrastructure of the Pragtinagar Engineering College in Shimla district is to be improved.
Imparting of quality technical education would be emphasized so as to improve the skill set of young employable people as unemployment was big problem in Himachal, said Bali.
Among the technical institutes in the state the minister counted, NIIT NIT Hamirpur, IIT Mandi, NIFT Kangra, 2 engineering colleges with an intake of 360 students in the government sector, 17 engineering colleges in the private sector with an intake of 7000 students in the private sector, 1 B Pharmacy college in government sector and 2 in private sector and several polytechnic and ITI institutes were functioning.
The minister said that a meeting with the vice chancellor of engineering university had been held and it had been stressed that quality education be ensured. “Those institutes which do not fulfill the infrastructure and faculty criteria could face de-recognition, said Bali.
