Dalai Lama urges Aung Suu Kyi to intervene for peace in Burma

Dharamsala: During the conflict between the Sinhalese and Tamil peoples in Sri Lanka, the Dalai Lama appealed to the Sri Lankan authorities to find a humane solution. Likewise, in recent months, Dalai Lama has written twice to Nobel Laureate Daw Aung San Suu Kyi requesting her to use her influence to bring about a peaceful resolution to the difficulties faced by the Rohingyas in Burma’s Rakhine province.

Lobsang Choedak, Press Officer of Tibetan Government in Exile said that “His Holiness’s representative in New Delhi has tried to seek an appointment with the Burmese embassy to convey His Holiness’s views about this serious human rights’ problem”.

In recent times, Dalai Lama has received several representations from concerned parties, including students and staff of the Jamia Millia Islamia University in New Delhi, where he delivered a lecture in September, requesting him to intervene. He told them that in the case of Burma, Daw Aung San Suu Kyi is the only leader he knows personally, and that he has conveyed his views to her.

Lobsang said ,”Some people have even suggested that His Holiness should consider visiting Burma, as part of an effort to resolve the situation. Given the opportunity, His Holiness is willing to visit trouble-spots around the world, if he can be of any help. Aside from this, His Holiness visits many countries regularly, at the invitation of educational and related institutions. However, due to political constraints beyond his control, particularly those prevailing in Asia, there are several countries where it has not been possible for His Holiness to visit so far; Burma, sadly, is among them.”

Nevertheless, whenever he has the opportunity, His Holiness will continue to share his concerns about this issue hoping that there will be a positive outcome.

His Holiness was mostly silent when the sinhalese government went on a killing rampage of the Tamils. His voice was NEVER heard. He could have influenced people in high places who might have made a difference. EVEN NOW HE CAN. But he is still silent. He is perhpas the MOST respected Buddhist. The killngs are done in the name of Buddhism even today. Where’s his concern? What is done to the Tibetans are exactly the same as what is being done to the Tamils

Very stupid of the Dalai Lama to try and get involved in something he has no business getting involved. The burmese have their own country and have decided their not going to let a group that’s known for causing problem everywhere in the world from causing trouble in their country. Perhaps the Dalai Lama needs a refresher course of Islam’s role in Buddhism demise in India for him to come to senses.
