Shimla: One of the most awaited sporting events of the year kicked off today here from Shimla. The event was flagged off in the presence of Sunila Dhar, deputy general manager, Maruti Suzuki, here today.
A total distance of 1,800km will be covered in six days, and it would not be any simple. The participants will deal with undulating terrains, rough roads, and extreme weather conditions on their way to Leh.
This year the rally will not follow its usual route. Instead, the rally will go to some of the highest motorable passes and villages of the world to test the strength of the riders. The tough route this year goes through some of the highest motorable passes and human settlements including Losar (4,079mt), Rumtse (4,300mt), Kunzum La (4,551mt), Komik (4,587mt), Pang (4,600mt) and Wari La (5,313mt).
However, the prize money associated with the event is worth every effort. This year the event offers total prize money of Rs10 lakh while the winner will be richer by Rs2 lakh in each category.
This year a total number of 260 participants will take part in the four-wheeler (Xtreme and Adventure) and two-wheeler categories. This year 14 foreign riders are participating in the rally. The safety measures have been strengthened so that no mishap takes place during the rally.
