Planning Commission hands Himachal top rank in environmental performance

Shimla: Planning commission of India has ranked Himachal Pradesh at top position in the country on environmental performance index (EPI), something that would be used for devolving green bonus funds to states involved in conserving environment.

The criteria on which the index was ranked took into account 16 indicators under five categories of air pollution, forests, water quality, water management and climate change, said Nagin Nanda, principal secretary environment.

Speaking about the highest ranking handed out to the state, chief secretary Sudripta Roy said that it was all because of proactive policy interventions taken by the state agencies and grass root delivery.

The planning commission is considering the environmental performance index under the performance criteria for states under the Gadgil Formula and to assign a 2 percent weightage for environment conservation. This would form the basis of devolving funds to the state, said Roy.
