Shimla: To study the impact of global slowdown following the 2008 financial crisis, economic and statistics department on Tuesday launched a state wide survey for gathering unemployment and employment data.
Speaking about the survey being undertaken, Pradeep Chauhan, economic advisor to the government said, “the last such survey was undertaken in 2004-05.â€
He said that there would be four sub rounds of data collection that would be spread out over the whole year to record season changes that occur in employment and unemployment.
Data collection, which is a highly technical exercise, would end in June, 2012 and it would take another six months for preparing the report.
Being conducted as part of a National Sample Survey (NSS), in Himachal there would be 300 sample modules of which 48 will collect data in urban centres.
An urban sample module would cover at least 200 households and the 252 modules that will collect data in rural areas, each would have to gather data about employment, including seasonal employment, in at least 150 households, said Chauhan.
When compared to the last survey, the current round of countrywide data collection will bring out what impact the 2008 crisis has had on the job market, he added.

The outputs of these surveys are useful if used by the policy makers. The outputs should not only be statistical reports but also analyse the trends over time and provide signals to the government for enhancing employment opportunities in the State.
