Medical College Shimla – emerging a premier institute of North India

Shimla: Counted among select state government medical colleges where complicated open heart surgeries are preformed regularly and equipped with high-tech 64 Slice MDCT machines, an MRI machine and an eye bank, Indira Gandhi Medical College and Hospital has emerged a premier medical institute in north India.

In its long march since the 1978, when the college was established, now the institution even offers super specialization courses such as DNB in Cardiology and MCh in Cardio Thoracic Vascular Surgery, said a government spokesman.

Under-graduate (MBBS) seats that were contained at 65 since 1978, have only recently been increased to 100 and though post graduate courses which was started in 1982 were confined to 16 disciples, specialty courses in pulmonary medicine, radiotherapy and Skin & VD have also been introduced recently, the spokesman said.

With the approval of Medical Council of India, Post graduate seats have been increased from 38 to 70 and another 8 are in the pipeline.

The medical college till 2010 has produced 2550 MBBS graduate doctors, 595 Post Graduates Doctors, 270 specialty diploma doctors and 78 BSc Paramedical students.

A new course in Language and Speech (DHLS) has been started in ENT department under collaboration with of National Institute of Speech and Hearing, Mysore and will have an intake of 20 students.

In a 10 year period, a batch of 60 students was admitted to Nursing School on regular basis, last year. Under Rogi Kalayan Samiti, 100 posts of staff nurses stand filled.

The college also dons status of a First Regional Cancer Centre by the Government of India where comprehensive cancer care to the cancer patients is provided.

A Telecobalt Unit machine installed at a cost of Rs. 3.40 crore in this cancer centre would ensure high quality precision radiotherapy and would be capable of treating 120 to 130 patients daily compared to 60 to 65 patients daily previously, thereby exhausting the waiting list for such critical patients.

The advanced 64 Slice MDCT Machine is one its kind in South East Asia and was installed at a cost of Rs 6.56 crores.

The new machine is capable of scanning the complete human body within ten seconds and 30 CT scans of the patients will be possible every day. Facility of angiography, bronchography, enterography and colonography etc. will be possible with the new set up.

The first Eye Bank in IGMC in collaboration with Eye Bank of Government Medical College, Chandigarh, had been established at a cost of Rs. 40 lakh. Eye donation, processing, preservation and transplantation of cornea facilities would henceforth be available in the eye bank.

To have adequate faculty for manning the departments, 96 posts of various categories in IGMC and 23 posts in Kamla Nehru State Hospital, Shimla for Mother & Child were created for improved patient care.

Five posts of Professors, 6 posts of Associate Professors, 15 posts of Assistant Professors and 2 Medical Officers have already been filled.

To get the nursing college functional one post of Nursing Superintendent, 13 posts of Matrons, 28 posts of Ward Sisters, one post of Assistant Controller (Finance), 3 posts of Personal Assistants and 2 posts of Clerks were filled up by way of promotion, said an government spokesman.
