Shimla: The High Court on Tuesday quashed the counseling conducted for PG courses by the directorate of medical education and asked for holding it afresh by drawing up separate merit lists for direct MBBS candidates and for in-service doctors designated as general duty officers (GDOs).
After drawing up separate merit list for the two categories, at the fresh counseling candidates are to be offered course choices in different specialties on the basis of a roaster that was followed till last year, the interim order passed by chief justice Kurian Joseph held. The case has been further listed for May 26
The admission process had become controversial after policy changes were made by drawing a common merit list that suited direct candidates over GDOs and counseling was conducted on that basis. Feeling aggrieved, the GDOs had taken the matter to court.
The selection process prevailing till last year involved having separate merit lists for GDO doctors as well as for direct ones, who then competed for seats in specific specialties reserved for either for GDO or direct category that followed a roster.
Medical Council of India permitted increase of PG seats from last year’s 19 to 38 for the new session of which 25 are reserved for in-service candidates. However, only 16 in-service candidates were able to qualify the written examination held in January 2010.
