Suspension of Himachal IAS officer charged with graft – revoked

Shimla: Unconcerned about the serious charges that senior IAS officer Sanjay Gupta faces, the Himachal government has revoked the suspension of the official, which he was placed under after having been arrested by vigilance bureau for graft at Parwanoo on 9th July, 2009.

Principal secretary personnel Daljit Dogra confirmed the revocation of suspension order by the government. Without assigning any reason, he said “suspension of Sanjay Gupta has been revoked. His posting orders would follow.”

Gupta was managing director of General Industries Corp, a state PSU, when vigilance sleuths caught up with him with Rs 2 lakh allegedly in the official car while he was in Parwanoo on July 9.

The officer was arrested for the non- cognizable offense and later raids were conducted at his Shimla and Panchkula residences.

Soon after his arrest the officer was placed under suspension.

Let out on bail two days later, but the vigilance bureau after tabulating the officials property worth, later slapped a disproportionate asset case and sought police custody.

Anticipatory bail of Gupta was turned down by the first by Special Judge (Forest) Shimla and then by the High Court. The accused had to undergo five day police remand following rejection of his bail application on 4 September, 2009.

Revocation of the suspension has raised eye-brows and dented the anti-corruption drive that the vigilance department has launched in the state

I was really impressed by the working of vigilance department over the last few months, whereby, they were catching many corrupt people in public offices red handed. Earlier, I was impressed by the leadership in department and in the government who were at least not discouraging the staff involved in raids.
Now reinstatement of IAS officer Sanjay Gupta and drug controller Sher Sigh has exposed the current regime and nexus with corrupt officials. BJP government in the state will have to bear the brunt in coming period. This is what Himachalies dislike most.

The current anti-corruption drive is nothing but just a show-off by this govt. that they are very much related to the state needs. This reinstatement clearly shows that even the courts and judges have not only gone corrupt but also people lacking faith in judiciary system in this state. Now such a condition has come that the himachal people wont like this govt again for atleast next 20 years. This is not now a diamond state but a corrupt diamond state.
