Himachal Paves Way For Setting Up 3 Private Universities

Shimla: The Himachal assembly passed three bills paving the way for setting up three new private universities.

The three bills passed were Shlooni University of Biotechnology and Management Science (Establishment and Regulations) Bill, 2009, Manav Bharti University (Establishment and Regulation) Bill, 2009 and the Arni University (Establishment and Regulation) Bill, 2009.

In the short debate that followed after introducing the bills, congress member Kuldeep Pathania asked the governemnt to make provisions for increasing in percentage terms the number of seats Himachal natives in these proposed universities.

The bill provided for 25% reservation for Himachalis in these private universities.

Pathania said “the fact that a private university can wind up business after 15 years and all the assets will be vested with it is an issue which needs to be looked into in the larger interest of the state.”

Rajesh Dharmani, congress, sought inclusion of the local MLA and MP on the governing body of the private university so that the interest of Himachali students could be protected.

Quality comes first!!! Before allowing private players to operate in the state, its very important to make sure that all quality guidelines will be implemented strongly.

While new universities are a welcome initiative care must be taken by the custodian of law and govt not to misuse these for their maliciosu benefits which has been the practice with pvt unviersities elsewhere. Further there is need to rope in vetern Himachali educationists, retired teacher of eminence who have contributed in their respective fields nationally or internationally. This would be better than just putting politicians on the hidden pay roll of thise universities.
