Shimla: Protesting SFI students held a march through the Lower Bazaar on Sunday, demanding revocation of rustication of two students from Himachal Pradesh University and acceptance of their demands which includes increasing hostel accommodation for girls, improving bus services for the community and others.

Led by Students Central Association (SCA) president Shikha Chauhan, protesters had stormed The Mall Road, a zone prohibited for such gatherings, on Saturday, which had led to a cane baton charge by the police. Seven students were arrested.

RM Sharma, district police chief, however denied any cane charge on the students. “The students had to be arrested for violating Section 144 of IPC orders that are in force along the entire Mall Road,” he said.

The seven students Naresh, Surender, Mahender, Munish, Neeraj, Sanjeev and Jasveer after spending the night in a lock up were produced before a judicial magistrate on Sunday and released on bail in the evening.
