BJP-Congress Fight To Gain Hold Over Volleyball Association

Shimla: Controversy over election to the Himachal Pradesh Olympics Association is yet to settle when another one over election to president the state Volleyball association has risen between congress and BJP leaders.

Virendra Kanwar a BJP MLA from Una and former Congress minister Ramlal Thakur confronted each other during the poll on Monday at Rampur.

Kanwar claimed before reporters on Tuesday that despite the bid to stall the election of state volley ball association by the supporters of outgoing president and former sports and youth minister Ram Lal Thakur at Rampur yesterday, he was elected president of the association unanimously.

Alleging he was also assaulted by supporters of the former minister, the BJP MLA said he had already lodged FIR in Shimla against some elements who were guarding the venue.

Kanwar said the election were held in the presence of the observer of all India volley ball federation, Ram Avtar Singh from Rajasthan and an officer of the state sports department Sarat Khalet.

Thakur held a parallel meeting where he was re-elected president of the state volleyball association.

Earlier to this Thakur and rival group led by Forest minister J P Nadda and Anurag Thakur, Hamirpur MP and son of chief minister Prem Kumar Dhumal, came to blow during poll for state olympics association.

While one group claimed electing Nadda as new president of the state olympics body another declared Thakur re-elected to the post. The Indian Olympics Association has yet not given its ruling on the election.
