Himachal Governor Deliveres Lecture on Right to Information Act

govjune4.JPGV.S.Kokje, Governor of Himachal today delivered a lecture on Right to Information Act to the participants of 12th Annual Summer Law Programme here today. The Summer Law Programme has been authorized by the Accreditation Committee of American Bar Association, Section of Legal Education. The Participants of the progoramme are drawn from all the Law Universities of United States of America.

He interacted with the students, faculty and local lawyers and discussed various aspects of the Right to Information Act. He said that the Act has meant to ensure transparency and accountability in the Government and added that there was a need for giving wide publicity to the provisions of the Act, especially in rural areas.

The students of Summer Law School are being taught Indian Law and Philosophy and International Human Rights, Comparative Study of Gender and Race besides International criminal law.

Trisha Sharma, Coordinator of Summer Law Programe in India welcomed the Governor.

Prof. Louise Harmon proposed the vote of thanks.

Prof. Douglas Colbert, Maryland Law School will also teach the students doing the Summer Law Programme which is being held from 29th May to 2nd July, 2007. Students from Calcutta University of Judicial Services will also under-go extensive study in the Summer Law School.

    Public lecture by Shri V.S Kokje, Governor of Himachal Pradesh shows the sincerity of the Government regarding implementation of RTI Act in letter and spirit.

    Almost two years of implementation have passed and it would be timely to initiate systematic audit of the implementation of RTI Act by various public authorities. Such intervention may trigger corrective actions, where ever there are deficiencies in implementation.

    Large scale educational programs are needed to enable the citizens to demand better performance from the public authorities
