A running with the hare and hunting with the hound policy smacks of hypocrisy and the politically motivated outburst over release of Masarat Alam by the Jammu & Kashmir government is playing with fire says Rajindar Sachar.
At one end many political parties are asking for curtailing the powers of the army at the same time they have termed Masart Alam a threat to security, when the courts have granted him bail in all the 27 cases slapped on him.
The Jammu & Kashmir government has been formed after BJP and PDP, the two principal parties, have shed some heavy ideological baggage. The experiment needs to be given a chance to attain peace in this troubled state and release of Alam should not derail that.

Couldn’t agree more. Mr. Mufti Sayeed is quite right in releasing Masrat Alam, not only because the law requires it, but also because Kashmir needs the ” healing touch” which can only come about by engaging with elements like him. The CM has a unique opportunity of doing so because the govt. at Delhi is with him, and I am glad he has seized the moment. It is heartening to see that Mr. Modi has also displayed genuine statesmanship in not escalating the matter, notwithstanding the cacophony in Parliament and TV channels. The latter, in particular, have degenerated into lynch-mobs and their ill-informed anchors have developed larger-than-life egos: they should be ignored. Left to them we would have been at war with Pakistan by now, Sashi Tharoor would be on Death Row, Kashmir would have left the Indian Union and Kejriwal would be living in a slum in Delhi as the Chief Minister! Kashmir is too important to be left to the jingoistic ignorance of either Parliament or TIMES NOW. We wish Mr. Modi and the Mufti fair winds on their historic journey.
