Students unhappy with DU job fair

New Delhi, June 11 (IANS) The first ever job fair by the Delhi University Students Union (DUSU), which started Tuesday, has not received much appreciation from students.

Most of the graduates at the fair rued that only Business Process Outsourcing (BPOs) and Knowledge Process Outsourcing (KPOs) companies came to recruit students.

Vishaka Gupta, a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) degree holder in Maths, told IANS: “Though companies like Wipro and Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS) are here, they are hiring only for the BPO and the back-end calling process.”

Graduates felt that the job fair was helpful only for B.Com. passouts.

“There is nothing in the job fair for people with science degrees. This placement opportunity is only for students with B.Com. courses,” said Tarun Grover, a chemistry graduate from Shahid Bhagat Singh college.

The job fair was also open to students outside DU and witnessed lots of registrations the first day, according to DUSU members.

Ganesh Kumar from Rajasthan Technical University told IANS: “Seeing the queue at the registration desk I was hopeful, but there is nothing substantial for people with a technical background.”

Companies present were also looking for graduates with non-technical backgrounds.

Gaurav Mathur, assistant manager from NIIT, told IANS: “We intend to hire at least 50 students from a non-technical background.”

Companies at the job fair included Max Bupa, Bharati Axa, Bagrrys India Ltd., Convergys and Wipro, to name a few.

The first ever two-day job fair by DUSU was inaugurated by Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit Tuesday.

It is being held at the DU sports complex in North Campus and will end on Wednesday.
