LDF to mark Chandy regime’s second anniversary as ‘betrayal day’

Thiruvananthapuram, May 5 (IANS) Kerala’s opposition Left Democratic Front (LDF) Sunday decided to celebrate the second anniversary of the Oommen Chandy-led United Democratic Front (UDF) government on May 18 as “Betrayal Day”.

Addressing reporters here, after a meeting of leaders of LDF constituents, convenor Vaikom Viswan said “Betrayal Day” would be observed all across the state.

“This government has been an abject failure in all fronts and we will take this aspect to the people. On that day, our workers will sport a black badge and will organise protest marches to all the village councils across the state,” he said.

Deciding to put more pressure on the Chandy government, the LDF leaders also decided to stage protests May 27 outside all the 14 district collectorates against the decision of the government to privatise drinking water distribution.

“The LDF will stage a sit-in that day in front of the state secretariat. The recent hike in electricity tariff is also unwarranted,” added the LDF convenor.

He also warned the Chandy government against taking a tough stand against political rivals and cornering them using police by foisting false cases on them.

“As a result they are unable to come to their home districts. This does not augur well for this government,” said Viswan, referring to a few LDF leaders who are now out on bail in various cases but barred by the court from entering their districts.

He also criticised the Chandy government for not rising to the occasion even after state and central intelligence reports have pointed out that there is an increase in subversive activities in the state.
