Sudden showers in Delhi, more expected Wednesday

New Delhi, April 2 (IANS) Mildly chilly winds coupled with thunder and light rain made it a pleasant Tuesday evening here after a period of relatively warm days. Showers are also likely Wednesday, an India Meteorological Department (IMD) official said.

In a sudden change, there was light rain followed by a thunderstorm around 5 p.m Tuesday. The city received rainfall till 5.30 p.m., the Met office said.

“The sudden rain is because of western disturbances, a succession of fast-moving air currents, which is not unusual at this time of the year,” L.S. Rathore, director general, IMD, told IANS.

“Thunder accompanied by hailstorm and light rain occurs in the end of March and in the first week of April every year. We expect this pattern to continue for another week,” Rathore added.

Tuesdays’ maximum temperature was three notches above average at 36 degrees Celsius, while the minimum was a notch below average at 17.8 degrees Celsius.

The weatherman forecast sporadic rainfall Wednesday as well.

“The sky will be partly cloudy Wednesday. Rainfall and thunder will occur in some areas,” the official said.

The day’s humidity wavered between a high of 84 and a low of 25 percent.

The maximum temperature Monday was 33.8 degrees Celsius, average for this time of the year, while the minimum was a notch below average at 17.9 degrees Celsius.
