Meira Kumar visits Mamata, condemns heckling

Kolkata, April 11 (IANS) Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar Thursday condemned the heckling of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, saying such an incident should never have happened.

“The incident is highly deplorable and I strongly condemn it. This should never have happened,” said Meira Kumar after paying a visit to Banerjee who is currently admitted to a private nursing home here.

The Lok Sabha speaker, who said she had been enquiring about Banerjee’s health throughout the day, wished her a speedy recovery.

The West Bengal chief minister was taken to the Belle Vue Clinic shortly after she landed in the city from Delhi Wednesday, and complained of breathing problems, palpitation and body pain.

Banerjee and her Finance Minister Amit Mitra were Tuesday heckled by activists of the Students’ Federation of India (SFI), the students wing of the Communist Party of India-Marxist, when she went to the Planning Commission office in Delhi for a meeting.

On Wednesday morning, Banerjee claimed that in Delhi she was on oxygen throughout Tuesday night.
