Islamabad, April 27 (IANS) A medical board has been constituted to treat Indian death row prisoner Sarabjit Singh who was admitted to the ICU of Lahore’s Jinnah Hospital after a murderous attack on him by fellow prisoners in Kot Lakhpat jail Friday, a media report said.
“A high-powered medical board has been constituted to treat the patient,” Allama Iqbal Medical College Principal Mahmood Shaukat told Dawn.
The board includes neurosurgeon Anjum Habib Vohra, neuro-physician Naeem Kasuri and Zafar Chaudhry.
Shaukat said Sarabjit’s condition was critical.
Sarabjit suffered critical head injuries in the assault. He was attacked by 4-5 prisoners with bricks and plates.
The assault on Sarabjit comes a few months after the death of Indian prisoner Chamel Singh in the same Kot Lakhpat jail after he was allegedly assaulted by jail staff.
A separate room has been temporarily converted into the ICU for Sarabjit’s exclusive treatment.
“We had received the patient with several deep head injuries and he was unconscious,” a doctor told Dawn.
He said Sarabjit was wearing a police trouser and casual shirt when he was shifted to the emergency.
Due to his deteriorating condition, a tube had been placed into the windpipe to help him breathe.
Sarabjit Singh has been on a death row in Pakistan since 1990 after being convicted by Pakistani courts for bomb blasts in Lahore and Multan cities which left 14 people dead.
Sarabjit’s family in India claims that he had inadvertently crossed into Pakistan in August 1990 in an inebriated state and was arrested there.
But police in Pakistan claimed Sarabjit Singh, who is known as Manjit Singh in India, was involved in acts of terrorism.
