Ghaziabad, April 2 (IANS) A councillor Tuesday demanded an audit of the Ghaziabad Municipal Corporation’s developmental works which, he alleged, resulted in a loss of Rs.46 crore to the civic agency over the past three years.
Presenting what he claimed to be documentary evidence at a press conference here, councillor Rajendra Tyagi alleged that the civic corporation suffered a loss of Rs.46 crore over the past three years, covering the tenures of two municipal commissioners.
“The municipal corporation hires auditors from the directorate of local bodies for two months and gets its accounts approved from the municipal development department. This indicates a collusion between the auditors and the municipal development department in the ongoing corrupt practices in the corporation,” Tyagi said.
He said former municipal commissioner Jitendra Singh, who retired Feb 28, bypassed the municipal board’s decision not to carry out a development work over Rs.50,000 without prior sanction and awarded several contracts to private agencies up to Rs.10 lakh.
Jitendra Singh is brother-in-law of P.L. Punia, chairman of the National Commission for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes.
His predecessor, Basant Lal, also gave development work to private agencies without the board’s approval during the Bahujan Samaj Party regime, Tyagi claimed.
Tyagi has asked Samajwadi Party leader Azam Khan to order an audit into the development work.
