The list will be updated at a meeting of the gram sabhas convened in all 3,243 panchayats April 7, Rural Development Minister Anil Sharma said.

Replying to a question, he said the government would ensure inclusion of all left-out families and deletion of ineligible persons from the list.

“We will strictly follow the government of India’s guidelines in formulation of the new BPL list, leaving no scope for any ineligible person to take advantage. Even the left out families will be given an opportunity to file an appeal,” he added.

Leader of Opposition Prem Kumar Dhumal said the government should invite applications to update the list and include eligible families “These could be scrutinised in the gram sabhas,” he added.

The minister said in 2008 and 2011 when the BPL list was reviewed as many as 15,669 and 31,209 families, respectively, were identified as ineligible and their names were omitted.
