Raid de Himalaya rallyist killed in road accident before start of event

Shimla: A rallyist biker from Manali, who was to compete in 13th Raid de Himalaya X-treme category of the motorsport, was killed in a road accident before start of the event on the Shimla-Kalka highway at Shoghi, close to the city here today morning.
Police officer Shakuntala Devi said that “biker SR Thakur (43) died on the spot.â€
Eye witnesses TP Negis said that the biker while overtaking a bus, hit into an oncoming vehicle and sustained major injuries. The victim is said to have died on the way to the hospital.
Condoling death of the participant, Manjeev Bhalla spokesman for Raid de Himalaya said, “all safety measures for holding the 6 day event that starts on Tuesday and ends in Srinagar on 16th October are in place.
Even though the Raid is counted among one of the toughest motorsport events in the world, in all its 13 editions there have been only two major accidents that occurred in 2001 in which 3 competitors were killed.
