Shimla: To provide a social security cover for weaker sections, Life Corporation of India (LIC), is all set to surpass last year’s target of bringing more than 59,000 people under a life cover that also provides additional benefits.
Talking about LICs initiatives of extending risk cover and financial security to economically weaker sections in Himachal, Senior Divisional Manager LC Meena said that the country’s premier insurer in the current year had already risk covered the lives of 45,244 persons in Himachal Pradesh who were below poverty line (BPL) charging only a premium of Rs 100 for the risk cover ranging from Rs 30,000 for natural death to Rs 75,000 for accidental death or permanent disability on account of accident.
In 2009-10, LIC had provided a risk cover for 59,000 BPL persons in Himachal and this year we are sure to surpass that number, he added.
There were four kinds of schemes for the economically backward classes, which included Janashree Bima Yojana, Social Security Group Schemes, Krishi Shramik Samajik Suraksha Yojna and Aam Admi Bima Yojana, he said.
Under Mahatma Gandhi Bunkar Bima Yojana, the risk cover is Rs 60,000 for natural death and Rs 1,50,000/- for death or permanent disability or even for loss of a limb or an eye, said the senior divisional manager.
As a free add on, under these schemes, scholarships are extended to two children and in 2010-11, a total of Rs 30,19,200/- has already been disbursed for 3854 scholarships, against Rs 31,47,000/- for 3476 scholarships in 2009-2010, said Meena.
