Shimla: With number of high rise buildings in Shimla increasing each year, Mohinder Singh, minister for urban development let the Himachal Vidhan Sabha today that the government was going to bring about a major amendment in the Town and Country Planning Act and Municipal Corporation Act, 1993 to remove existing shortcomings.
In reply to a question by Sukhwinder Singh Sukhu (Cong), he said that there are 187 high rise buildings within the limits of the Shimla Municipal Corporation, which had over five storeys.
The highest building was being constructed by the Jagson International for the ropeway to Jakhoo, which was 12 storeys, he said and hastened to add that the revised plan for the building which will house the lower point of the ropeway was still pending with the government.
Admitting that there were a number of buildings with six, seven, eight and even 10 storeys, including the 10-storey high Himachal Pradesh High Court building, he said that while in some cases the buildings were government buildings and in others their construction plan had been approved.
Status of most of the other high rise buildings was being verified and the state government was also contemplating what action should be taken against those that were illegal.
He said that the government had asked a society under the jawahar Lal Nehru Urban Renewal Mission to undertake a detailed survey-cum-investigation of the high rise buildings in the city.
While congressman Sukhu claimed that there was no provision for having six, seven, eight, nine or more storey buildings in the Town and Country Planning Act, he sought to know that whether the act would be suitably amended to grant permission for buildings with more than four storeys.
The minister responded that there are 141 buildings with six storeys, 26 buildings with seven storeys, 13 buildings with eight storeys, two buildings with nine storeys, four buildings with 10 storeys and one with 12 storeys.
